Really, how important is undergraduate involvement?

November 29, 2016

If you go to Ohio State, you’re all too familiar with the thousands of organizations OSU offers. It can be quite overwhelming to say the least.

Often students are so wrapped up in their busy lives between school projects, friends or family and work they don’t have time for additional activities. So what’s the point of getting more involved than you already are?

Building Professional Relationships

I cannot stress enough the importance of networking while you are an undergraduate student. By joining clubs related to your career, you get exposed to students, professionals and companies that will inevitably cross your path again when you’re out looking for jobs. Touring companies, talking to people with more experience than you and creating connections with other students all help you get in at companies post graduation because these actions help you to make connections with the people that matter.

Why is PRSSA a good example?

PRSSA is a student organization with a network of over 11,000 communication and PR students nationwide. Not only do they bring in weekly speakers working in varied communications careers but, according to prssa.org, the organization exposes you to over 10,000 students and 20,000 professionals through national and regional events every year.

Benefits PRSSA Offers

  • Professional headshots

  • Travel opportunities

  • Internships with their student run agency

  • Resume workshops

  • Lots more!
